The Thrifty Truck rental fleet is one of the largest on the road in Australia. Whilst many of the larger trucks require a specific Truck License, vehicles up to 4.2 tonnes, such as the Fuso Canter can be driven on car license. Due to the more specialised nature of the truck fleet, not all vehicles will be listed nor available at all locations. Thrifty will always endeavour to match the vehicle booked with the vehicle you collect and in most instances this is the case, however, as with all rental providers, please note that all vehicles are booked by Vehicle Category and Thrifty do not guarantee a specific make or model, vehicles offered within the same rental category may vary by location.
Utes, Vans and smaller trucks up to 4.5 tonnes GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) and 4.2 metres long can all be rented and driven using a car license. Gross Vehicle Mass refers to the maximum weight when fully loaded - so the actual standalone vehicle weight will be less, 3 and 4.2 tonners being common sized small trucks. Trucks longer than 4.2 metres require a Medium or Heavy Rigid license whilst larger buses requires a Light Rigid license.
Thrifty accept all major credit and debit cards; the latter must be endorsed with either the Visa or Mastercard logo. The credit card needs to be in the name of the renter. In order to cover merchant fee processing costs, Thrifty charge a processing fee across all cards, the more expensive being for Diners, JCB and American Express cards. Debit cards can only be used at selected locations. Cash is not accepted.
Not all vehicles are fitted with lifters. When making your booking include this requirement in the comments section to allow confirmation prior to vehicle collection.
No. Even with the purchase of Thrifty's Collision Damage Waiver protection, overhead damage is not covered. Some 3rd party insurance options may include cover. To avoid damage costs be extra vigilant on clearances particularly when driving around tunnels, bridges, trees or other low hanging objects. As overhead collisions are a common cause of damage, it’s a good idea to confirm your truck or van's height clearance before leaving the Thrifty branch.

Thrifty's commercial fleet come with both diesel and petrol fuelled vehicles, the majority being diesel. Check with Thrifty staff before leaving the branch as to the fuel requirements of your particular vehicle.
Yes. To avoid cleaning fees it is strongly advisable to return your vehicle with a clean and emptied cargo area.
