The Jayco Wanderer is a great pick for solo travellers and couples. It's automatic, with a Mercedes cab and an instant hot-water system, so you're covered on comfort from the start.

What you won't find in the spec sheet is how good the club-lounge layout is. It converts into a double bed at night, but during the day it gives you a proper place to sit and relax — you're not stuck perched on the bed all day like you are in some smaller vans.

The fridge is spacious, so food storage isn't an issue even a few days in. Just pack smart and you'll be fine for a week or more.

The trade-off is parking. This isn't a van you want to wrestle into a tight shopping centre car park — stick to on-street parking where you can, it's a lot less hassle.

It's safe, secure and really simple to drive, which makes it a solid choice if it's your first time behind the wheel of a campervan.

One tip: before you pick up, arrange a 'click and collect' food shop from Coles or Woolworths near your first night's destination. It saves you time and makes cooking that first dinner a lot easier.
