DriveNow's take: vehicle | One of the most popular Hi-Tops, this Cruisin campervan offers great value and quality. The new design makes it more economical too. One of the most popular Hi-Tops around, this Cruisin campervan delivers great value and quality. The new design makes it more economical than earlier models. This is perfect for first-time campervaners. It's got basic features and it's really simple to drive. You get everything you need for a long weekend or a week up and down the coast — gas cooker, microwave, fridge/freezer, plus bedding and linen. After day five, you'll appreciate how straightforward this vehicle is. No complicated systems to figure out, just the essentials done well. Two things before you hit the road: avoid driving on highways and country open roads at dusk, and do a click-and-collect food shop from Coles or Woolworths near your first night's destination. | The Cruisin Rover is a compact camper that maintains ample space for both living and the essentials, making it perfect for solo travellers or couples. The double bed converts to a seating area with rear doors that open up for great semi-outdoor picnics. The Cruisin Rover is a compact camper that maintains ample space for both living and the essentials. It's perfect for solo travellers or couples who want a newer vehicle at a discounted rate compared to larger 2-berth options. The standout feature is the convertible double bed that transforms into a seating area. The rear double doors open up completely, creating an excellent semi-outdoor dining space when you're stopped in scenic locations. This makes the Rover shine in warmer climates where you'll spend most of your time outside. Here's the trade-off: that compact size means no walk-through between the driver cabin and living area. And the bed conversion becomes tedious if you're setting it up daily. Most hirers grab Cruisin's camp table and chairs or bring their own for longer trips since indoor living space is limited. For first-timers, this vehicle represents a great step up from basic campervans to one with toilet and shower facilities. It drives like a car, and Cruisin's excellent customer service helps if you have questions on the road. One critical tip: practice the bed setup with depot staff before you leave. You'll be doing this daily, so make sure you've got it down. The Rover works brilliantly if you don't mind the daily conversion routine and want to spend your time outdoors with all the essentials covered. | Compact and easy to drive, the Sandpiper is a great option for couples or solo travellers who want comfort without the bulk. The front seats swivel towards the dining table and the rear bed stays fixed — no daily setup needed. The Sandpiper hits the sweet spot for couples and solo travellers who want comfort without wrestling a massive motorhome around Australia's roads. It drives more like a car than a truck, but you still get full self-containment with toilet and shower. The clever layout saves you from the daily bed conversion routine that wears thin by day five of longer trips. The front seats swivel around to face the dining table behind the driver's cabin, making the most of your living space when parked. The rear bed stays put — just climb in and sleep. You do give something up for this compact design: getting into that rear bed takes a bit more effort than stepping into a larger motorhome. And storage is tight, so pack light with soft luggage. Empty everything into the internal compartments and stash your bags in the external storage — it transforms the space from cramped camper to holiday home. First-timers love this van, especially solo campers. The vehicle is fairly new, reducing breakdown risks, and Cruisin's customer service and roadside assistance are excellent if questions come up during your hire. Make the most of the great outdoor access — you get a sliding door on one side and double doors at the rear. Perfect for opening up to nature, though watch for insects sneaking in and out when you've got everything open. | Great for families with young children — the Adventurer has 2 anchor points for child seats and 2 seating areas inside for more living space. The rear dinette converts into a double bed, giving you more room during the day. The Adventurer works best for families with young children. You get 2 anchor points for child seats and 2 separate seating areas inside — more living space than most vans this size. The rear dinette converts into a double bed, so you have proper room to move around during the day instead of being cramped around a permanent bed. This van offers ample space for longer trips when you're travelling as 2 adults and 2 children. The toilet and shower are separate, which makes a difference when you're living in it for a week. The trade-off: if you're travelling with 3 or 4 adults, the overhead bed is a problem. You need a ladder to get up there and there's minimal room once you're in it. This vehicle is built for families, not groups of adults. It's perfect for first-time hirers looking for a family getaway. Cruisin offers excellent customer service if you have questions on the road. Before you drive off: get familiar with the size. Check your blind spots and make sure your luggage is stowed properly so it doesn't slide around while you're driving. | The Cruisin 4 Berth Deluxe is one of the best-in-class 4 berth models, under 2 years old with newer furnishings. It has a separated toilet and shower, so the bathroom doesn't stay wet like vehicles where they're combined. The Cruisin 4 Berth Deluxe is one of the best-in-class 4 berth models. At under 2 years old, you get newer furnishings than many other vehicles in this category. The separated toilet and shower is the standout feature — it keeps the bathroom from constantly being wet, which makes a real difference on longer trips. The fixed bed and overhead cabin bed mean no daily setup for sleeping. There's plenty of storage space for the vehicle's size, though soft luggage works better than hard cases to fit the compartments. The trade-off is the overhead cabin bed — this vehicle isn't recommended for four large adults or children too young to climb the ladder. The fixed beds also limit you to one seating area. This is a great pick for first-time campervan hirers. Cruisin has good customer service and roadside assistance if anything goes wrong, and the vehicle's age reduces the risk of maintenance issues during your trip. When you pick it up, remember you're driving a large vehicle — check your blind spots and don't take corners or accelerate like you would in a car. Book powered campsites to use the full range of appliances. | Comfortable 4-berth option that's a good mix of quality and value. Fixed rear bed and separated toilet/shower make it ideal for longer trips. This is a comfortable, practical campervan that hits the sweet spot between quality and value. The fixed rear bed and separated toilet and shower make it ideal for longer trips — no nightly bed setup required, and you get proper facilities instead of a wet bathroom. After a week on the road, you'll appreciate that the overhead bed can stay made during the day while the rear bed remains permanently set up. Storage is good for a 4-berth, and the kitchen setup handles family cooking without feeling cramped. The trade-off is interior space when you're not sleeping. The only seating area inside is directly behind the driver cabin, which gets tight with four people. Fine for couples who want the extra space, but families might feel squeezed during bad weather. This works well for first-time motorhome hirers who are confident driving larger vehicles. Cruisin provides solid customer service while you're on the road, and the vehicle comes with everything you need for a family camping trip. Before you drive off, take a proper walk around the vehicle and sit in the driver's seat. Get familiar with your blind spots if you haven't driven something this size before. | The Cruisin 6 Berth Deluxe is a high-end model under 2 years old that's perfect for families or groups. The cooktop has both electric and gas options, and the toilet and shower are separated unlike most other campers. The Cruisin 6 Berth Deluxe is a high-end model under 2 years old that's perfect for families or groups. You get both electric and gas cooking options and a separated toilet and shower — rare in most campers. This feels more like a mobile home than cramped camping. Where smaller vehicles make you live on top of each other, this one gives you proper space for daily life. The multiple beds mean you can leave one set up permanently and avoid the nightly pack-down routine that gets old fast on longer trips. The trade-offs? You'll pay premium prices for this new, luxurious vehicle — it's not for budget travellers. The size also means a steep learning curve if you're not used to driving larger vehicles. We'd recommend this for first-time campers who are confident drivers and want something closer to regular accommodation. Cruisin excels at roadside support, which matters when you're learning the ropes. Before you leave the depot, walk around the vehicle to get used to the size and sit in the driver's seat to check your visibility while driving. | Spacious motorhome that sleeps 6 with a convertible rear bed that gives you living space during the day. Great for families and groups, plus it has a TV/DVD player to keep kids entertained when the weather turns. The Discovery sleeps 6 people with a smart convertible bed in the rear — you get proper living space during the day, then convert it for sleeping at night. It's an upper mid-range vehicle that works well for both experienced campers and first-timers who are confident drivers. The TV/DVD player inside is a lifesaver for keeping kids entertained when the weather's not great. Just remember to pack their favourite DVDs. This vehicle shines on longer trips, especially if you're travelling with fewer than 6 people — you'll have plenty of space to spread out. The size and weight do mean higher fuel consumption though, so budget accordingly. One important tip: plan to arrive at your first campsite before dusk. Most companies don't allow night driving, and it can be dangerous if you're not used to handling a motorhome. |
DriveNow's take: supplier | Cruisin' is an Australian-owned motorhome company known for a modern, well-equipped fleet and a genuinely comfortable ride. They're not the cheapest option, but the quality shows — especially if you're planning a longer trip. Cruisin' is one of Australia's standout, Australian-owned motorhome providers. They've built a strong reputation on the back of a modern, well-maintained fleet and solid customer service. Their motorhomes are designed to make the whole journey easier, not just the driving part. Every branch offers storage too, so you can drop off a suitcase before you hit the road — just know you'll need to return the vehicle to the same branch, within opening hours, to pick it back up. Here's what surprises people: Cruisin' isn't the cheapest option out there. That extra cost buys you better build quality, more equipment, and a more comfortable rig. If you want more space and better facilities on a longer trip, it's usually money well spent. If you're on a tight budget and just need something basic for a short hop, you might not need to pay the premium. Pickup is generally quick and easy, unless you're travelling during peak season or hit a busy day at the depot. Do the express check-in beforehand and have your card ready for any outstanding payments — it'll speed things up further. If something goes wrong on the road, Cruisin's roadside team is available 24/7 for technical questions, accidents, or breakdowns. It's a free service included with every rental, and the number's right there on your keychain. Cruisin' suits pretty much everyone — solo travellers, families, groups — you'll usually find something in their fleet that fits. It's a great all-rounder for couples or small families, with two fixed double beds, a spacious bathroom, and a well-equipped kitchen. The no-fuss layout means less time setting up beds and more time actually enjoying the trip. One more thing: Cruisin' has a full library of motorhome guides and tutorials on their YouTube channel, worth a watch before you pick up so you're not fumbling with the gas or the water system on day one. Sleeping capacity
How many people the vehicle sleeps. Where the supplier separates them, adult and child places are shown; a child berth isn't big enough for an adult. Seatbelts are a separate number, so check both for a group.
Bed layout
Where each bed is and what kind it is. Some beds stay made up, while others are made from the seating each night; Main bed setup shows which.
Bed sizes
Each bed's length × width in metres. Compare the length with the tallest person travelling, and the width with who is sharing.
The bed types in this comparison:
Overcab bed
A raised sleeping area above the driver's cab. Check the vehicle details for access and any weight limits.
Dinette or lounge bed
The dining or lounge seats convert into a bed. The same space is used for sitting during the day and sleeping at night.
Rear bed
A bed at the back of the vehicle. Its position does not tell you whether it stays made up or converts from seating; check Main bed setup for that.
Double bed
One shared bed for two people. Compare the dimensions, as double beds differ in size between vehicles.

A toilet and shower on board mean you can stay at basic or free campsites without amenities, and skip the night-time walk to a shared block. With a toilet only, you have the essentials; with neither, plan to stay where there are facilities.
An onboard toilet needs emptying at a dump point every few days.
More in the handbook: Emptying the toilet and waste tanks
The supplier's age range for this model. You're given one vehicle from within it, so Up to 2 years means it has been on the supplier's fleet for no more than about two years, 4+ years means at least four, and 4–7 years means between four and seven.
Newer vehicles generally show less wear and are more likely to have recent equipment. Older vehicles have usually covered more kilometres, which raises the chance of a breakdown. Older fleets are often the budget option, and a well-maintained older camper can still suit a trip.
Suppliers count age differently. Some count time on their fleet, others go by model year, so treat a one-year difference as approximate.
More in the handbook: How likely are breakdowns?
The fridge's capacity in litres; a range means it depends on the vehicle you're given. A bigger fridge means fewer shopping stops, which matters most for families and on remote stretches.
How the fridge is powered when you're parked affects how long it keeps food cold away from a powered site.
More in the handbook: Using the fridge
Heating or air-conditioning for the living area with the engine off. Many units only run at a powered site, while some heaters run from gas or the house battery, so check what each one needs.
Cab air-conditioning only works while driving. Portable heaters or fans may be included or available to hire.
More in the handbook: Heating and cooling
A fixed bed stays made up, so you can rest at any time without rearranging. A bed made from the dinette or lounge gives you more living space by day, but takes a few minutes to set up each night and pack away each morning.
Some dinette beds can be left made up if you don't need the table.
Not specified means the supplier doesn't publish this for that model. It doesn't mean the vehicle lacks it.
Longer vehicles have more room inside but are harder to park in town and need a bigger campsite. A range means it depends on the vehicle you're given.
Ferry fares for campervans are usually charged by length.
More in the handbook: Ferry costs
Clean water for drinking, cooking and washing. A bigger tank means longer between refills, which matters at free campsites without taps. A range means it depends on the vehicle you're given.
How long it lasts depends on how you use it, especially for showers.
More in the handbook: Fresh water
How much standing room there is inside. Taller travellers will be more comfortable with more headroom; in low-roof campers most people can't stand upright.
In a combined wet room the toilet sits inside the shower, so the whole room gets wet when you shower. A separate toilet and shower works more like home but takes more space.
Not specified means the supplier doesn't publish this for that model. It doesn't mean the vehicle lacks it.
What you can cook on inside the vehicle. The number of burners affects how much you can cook at once, which matters for a group.
Gas cooktops run from an LPG bottle that you refill or swap on the road.
More in the handbook: Using the gas bottle
Used water from the sink and shower collects in the grey-water tank. A bigger tank means fewer stops at a dump point, and some campsites don't let you drain it on the ground.
It's separate from the toilet, which has its own cassette or tank.
More in the handbook: Emptying the toilet and waste tanks
Everyone travelling needs their own seatbelt, so this is the most people the vehicle can carry, even if it sleeps more. Some seats are in the living area rather than the cab.
More in the handbook: Will I need multiple vehicles?
Child seats need suitable seat positions and anchor points, and some positions only take a booster. The combination shown is what the supplier allows, so check it covers every child's age and size.
Child seats are usually hired from the supplier as an extra.
More in the handbook: Child seat hire
How you can play music, connect a phone and watch a screen. A screen doesn't guarantee TV reception or DVD playback, and listed USB ports may not charge every device quickly.
Where it says some models, it isn't guaranteed in every vehicle of that model.
More in the handbook: Using the TV or screen
How wide the vehicle is affects narrow country roads, standard car parks and tight campsites. A range means it depends on the vehicle you're given.
Multi-storey car parks, drive-throughs and some bridges have height limits, so know your vehicle's height before you set off. A raised-roof height, where shown, applies when the roof is lifted while parked.
More in the handbook: Vehicle height awareness
A reversing camera makes parking a large vehicle much easier, because you can't see directly behind most campers. Some models means only some vehicles in the fleet have one, so you may not get it.
With a walk-through you can move between the cab and the living area without getting out, which is handy in rain or at night. Without one, you step outside to get from one to the other.
Cab air-conditioning or heating makes long drives more comfortable. It runs with the engine, so it doesn't cool or heat the living area when you're parked; see Heating & cooling when parked.
Hot water makes showers and washing up easier, especially in cooler months. Without it, you'll heat water on the cooker for dishes.
Where shown, the energy source tells you what the hot water runs on.
In many smaller campers the table becomes the bed, so once the bed is made there's nowhere inside to sit and eat. A separate table matters on rainy days, or when someone wants to sleep while others are still up.
Not specified means the supplier doesn't publish this for that model. It doesn't mean the vehicle lacks it.
A table and chairs make it easy to eat and relax outside, which helps most in smaller campers. Some suppliers include them; others hire them out per trip, so check before comparing prices.
More in the handbook: Equipment you can hire
An outdoor or slide-out cooker keeps cooking smells and heat out of the living area, which helps in warm weather and in small campers. Many campsites also have shared barbecues.
Not specified means the supplier doesn't publish this for that model. It doesn't mean the vehicle lacks it.
An outside locker keeps bulky or dirty gear, such as chairs, hoses or wet shoes, out of the living area. Space inside is limited, so soft bags pack more easily.
More in the handbook: Luggage
Not specified means the supplier doesn't publish this for that model. It doesn't mean the vehicle lacks it.
A microwave that needs mains power only works at a powered site, not when you're free camping.
More in the handbook: What works when connected to power
A solar panel tops up the house battery during the day, which helps run the lights and fridge away from a powered site. How much it adds depends on the panel, the weather and how much power you use.
More in the handbook: Battery and solar
How the vehicle is powered when parked. At a powered site everything runs; off-grid, the house battery and any solar run the lights, fridge and charging.
Not every appliance works from every source: air-conditioning and microwaves usually need mains power.
More in the handbook: What works off-grid
Whether pots, pans, plates and cutlery come with the vehicle. Most suppliers include a kitchen kit; some charge for it as an extra, so check what's included before comparing prices.
More in the handbook: What's supplied with the vehicle
Most rental campervans are automatic, and some older or budget models are manual. If you only drive automatics, make sure every vehicle you're considering is one.
