What to do in Faro

Known as 'the gateway to the Algarve', a hugely popular holiday destination for people the world over, Faro is a city that offers just about everything to those that have access to a car and the will to explore somewhere fantastic. Perched right on the edges of the southern shores of Portugal, Faro is home to some 200 kilometres of outstanding natural coastline, much of which forms the shimmering beaches that glow under the sun's light.

If there's one thing that Faro has in abundance, it's beaches, and the best-known of these is Ilha de Faro. This broad expanse of gold stretches out into the Atlantic, bisecting it - on one side, you can relax in the calm, blue lagoon. In the other, why not take on the waves? Portugal has some of the most imposing walls of water on Earth, not that it deters the surfers!

The natural beauty of Faro doesn't end with surf, sun and sand, however; there are acres of sprawling, verdant parkland just begging for a day's hike, and the city itself is replete with buildings of astounding intricate architecture, dripping with history. Don't get the idea that Faro is just for the scenery hounds, however: it's a vibrant, exciting city jam-packed with a whole raft of exciting things to see and do.

For something of the macabre, head to the Capela dos Ossos. Translated to 'Chapel Of Bones' this monument is just that - real human bones of the monks that used to congregate here, arranged into full skeletons that welcome you into the ancient walls. More bones and skulls decorate the interior - there really is nothing quite like it...
