Rome is a city known for its beauty, food, architecture and history. Whether you're staying in Rome or heading elsewhere in The Boot, you're sure to enjoy Italy's unique culture, cuisine and romance.

A cosmopolitan city of close to 3 million people, Rome is home to some of the world's most famous ancient ruins. From the Colosseum to the Pantheon, Ancient Rome's many treasures continue to amaze travellers to this day, not forgetting of course that country within the city, the Vatican.

Headed outside of the city? There's plenty to do in Italy. Lose yourself in the streets of Venice, head to beautiful Tuscany to discover some of the world's finest wines, or take in the art and culture of Florence.

Whatever you plan to do during your holiday in Italy, you'll probably be starting your journey from Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino International Airport. This air hub is the busiest airport in Italy and the sixth busiest in Europe, thanks to its central location and abundance of airlines. The airport is situated just 25km from the centre of Rome, and offers both international and domestic flights.

Airlines & Terminals

Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino houses four separate terminals.

Terminal 1 is home to all domestic and Schengen-area flights. Schengen member countries - most European Union as well as a few non-EU countries - have agreements with each other to abolish border control between countries. Lines operating out of this terminal include Alitalia, Air Europa, Air Corsica, Air France, Air One, Darwin Airline, Luxair and KLM.

Terminals 2 and 3 offer international flights to non-Schengen countries as well as domestic and Schengen flights. Blue Air, EasyJet and Wizz Air are located in Terminal 2, while Aer Lingus, Aegean Airlines, Aeroflot Russian Airlines, Aeromexico, Air Cairo, Air Algerie and a few other international lines occupy Terminal 3.

If you're flying with an American or Israeli airline, you'll be heading to Terminal 5. Lines located here include Delta Airlines, American Airlines, Israir Airlines, United Airlines, El Al and US Airways.

Shopping & Duty-Free

A number of duty-free shopping opportunities, as well as a variety of dining experiences exist within the airport. If you're in pursuit of perfumes, spirits or tobacco products Aelia Duty Free is just what you need, and is found in five different locations throughout the airport. Fashionistas might want to check out Liu Jo, Sundek, Boggi Milano, Timberland or Harmont & Blaine.
