Germany's capital, Berlin, is probably best described as a 'happening' city - it really does have something for every kind of visitor. Its unrivalled party scene is the envy of hedonists all across the world, while it could also be described as the creative hub of Europe, such is the vibrancy of its art and culture scene. Meanwhile, the city's well-told history is quite literally etched on virtually every street and building.

It's got a wealth of attractions that make it an ideal destination for a European holiday. Take your pick from sights like the Reichstag, historic Checkpoint Charlie, the sobering Holocaust Memorial, the Brandenburg Gate and enough museums to keep you busy for a year. At the same time, it's location, straddling Eastern and Western Europe, makes it the ideal starting point from which to explore the whole of this great continent.

Outside of Berlin, Germany has tonnes to excite visiting tourists. Try a Bratwurst and a beer at the famous Hoefbrauhaus in Munich, climb the steps of the magnificent cathedral in Cologne or wander through the towns and villages on the 600-kilometre long Marchenstrasse.

Airport and Terminals

As an international visitor you'll be arriving at the Berlin's main airport, Berlin-Tegel, located 12 kilometres north-west of the city. It has five terminals and handles around 20 million passengers annually.

Airlines operating out of Berlin-Tegel include, but are not limited to, airberlin, Air France, Australian Airlines, British Airways, Iberia, Iraqi Airways, KLM, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Turkish Airlines and United Airlines.

Berlin-Brandenburg International Airport is currently under construction at Schoenefeld and will replace Tegel once it's completed.

Directions and Transport

Berlin-Tegel's location so close to the city makes getting there and back a breeze. By car you can reach the airport by taking exit 10 off the A 111, which runs northbound from the city. The journey should take around 25 minutes.

There are plenty of public transport options too. Four BVG (Berlin Transport Services) bus stops are located outside Terminals A and B. You'll find express buses here to take you to various city locations, including Alexanderplatz, Hauptbahnhof (the main train station) and Zoologischer Garten. From there you can join the main Berlin transport and underground network. Intercity buses depart from Terminal E and service Dresden, Leipzig and Stettin.

There is no direct train service to or from the airport, however, all bus services connect with the underground network, making access to the train network very easy.

Shopping and Duty Free

If you find yourself with some time to kill before your flight you'll find plenty of shops to browse, as well as restaurants and cafes to relax in.

Shops at the airport include Boss, Marc O'Polo, Fabriano Boutique, Wolford and Esprit, as well as an extensive duty-free shop for last-minute gifts and treats.

Meanwhile, hungry passengers can take their pick from the likes of Burger King, Cindy's Diner, Restaurant Red Baron, EssBahn and more, as well as several bars where you can try the best in German beer.
