Finland, tucked away in the northeastern corner of Europe, is a rugged land covered in dense forests and icy lakes. It has a slightly more 'away from it all' feel than the rest of the continent and as a result its people are fiercely independent, staunchly loyal and incredibly welcoming. Its capital, Helsinki, is no different, a beautiful sea-side city with glorious and rugged coastline looking out over the many islands dotting the ocean.
It's a city that retains its heritage and somewhat old-world attitude. Architecture from the early part of the 20th century still features strongly, while Art Nouveau buildings and museums that boast of the proud Finnish history bring a distinctly nostalgic aura to the city.
But that's not to say that it's old-fashioned, dull or boring. Far from it! Helsinki has a thriving youth culture and its bar and club scene rivals the best in Europe. The country's history is intriguing and various shows and tours take tourists on an exciting adventure through its stories. Take a short drive outside the city in your rental car to enjoy the spectacular forests of the Nuuksio National Park.
Old and new - Helsinki has it all.
Helsinki airport, also known as Helsinki Vantaa, is Finland's primary international airport and welcomes almost 15 million passengers through its doors each year. It is located in the small commuter town of Vantaa, just 17 kilometres north of Helsinki. The airport comprises of two terminals - T1 and T2 - and connects Finland with most main international destinations.
Many of the world's major airlines operate flights from Helsinki, some of which include Air Canada, Air China, Air France, American Airlines, British Airways, China Southern Airlines, Delta Airlines, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, KLM, Lufthansa, Malaysia Airlines, Onur Air, Singapore Airlines, SAS, Turkish Airlines, United Airlines and US Airways.
Driving to and from the airport is relatively easy in Helsinki. The city and airport are linked via an expressway, with both locations well signposted.
If you've already returned your Helsinki rental car you have a number of public transport options. By rail, passengers can take a train from the city to nearby Tikkurila station. From here a courtesy bus links to the airport six times each hour.
Various buses also run from the airport to the city. The 615 service transports passengers to the main train station and takes between 30 and 55 minutes, depending on the time of day. A Finnair express service also operates from outside Terminal 2 and runs direct to the city several times a day.
Helsinki has a fantastic shopping scene, but if it still hasn't satisfied your shopping needs you'll find plenty at the airport. Designer fashion labels such as Boss, Marimekko, Burberry and Ralph Lauren, as well as a chocolate boutique, extensive duty-free shops and various gift stores can all be found here.
If you're hungry you can grab a bite before your flight at any of the bars, restaurants and cafes where Finnish and international treats are served up aplenty.
