Julia Creek is a small town in Northern Queensland that not many people have heard of. Home to just 400 locals, Julia Creek is in the true Australian outback and not for the faint-hearted. Matched with the blistering heat, dusty winds and a scorching sun, the Dust N Dirt is one of the most challenging festivals in Australia.
Beginning in 1994, locals wanted to get Julia Creek on the map, and thus the Dust N Dirt triathlon was born. Although the triathlon is not the longest in Australia, it is said to be the toughest purely due to the tough conditions in Julia Creek. The population of Julia Creek doubles each year during the festival, all brave enough to give the triathlon a go. However, if triathlons are not your cup of tea, the festival has grown to include other activities such as live music and entertainment.
Julia Creek is right in the middle of the outback, and the best way to get there is by driving. Turn the drive into a holiday, and hire a campervan for your trip. Campervans are your home on wheels with fully equipped kitchens, bathrooms, double beds and plenty of space to be comfortable. The closest pick-up location is in Townsville, which is an approximately 7-hour drive.
