Road Rules and Licence Requirements
Road rules are set by each state and territory. Find the official rules for where you're driving, and make sure your licence documents are in order before you collect the car.
When you hire a car in Australia, you must follow the road rules. Breaking them can bring large penalties, and the rental company can refuse to hand over the car if you don't hold the right licence. Our safety tips for car hire travel cover the practical side of driving in Australia.
If your overseas licence isn't in English, you need a certified English translation or an International Driving Permit (IDP). If your licence is in English, some rental companies may still ask for an IDP. We recommend travelling with an IDP to avoid problems at pick-up or during your trip. See driver's licence requirements.

Each state and territory publishes its own road rules and licence information for visitors:
- Victoria: Department of Transport and Planning

- Queensland: Driving in Queensland on an overseas licence
- South Australia: Australian road rules in South Australia
- Northern Territory: Driver licence rules for visiting drivers
- Western Australia: Department of Transport WA
- Tasmania: Road safety and rules
- ACT: Road rules in the ACT
Certified translations and international driver permits
You can get a certified translation online from several providers. Choose one that is NAATI accredited and certified. Motoring associations such as RACV and RACQ also provide translation services.
You generally need to get an International Driving Permit in your home country before you leave. Processing times depend on the provider, so apply well before your trip.
