Ferries

Taking a hire car on a ferry to an island is common in Australia, but each rental company sets its own rules. Some don't allow it, and others need your request in advance or set conditions. Your insurance or liability cover may not apply while the car is on the ferry or being loaded on and off.

Tell the rental company before you book if you plan to take the car on a ferry, and get its permission. Check the conditions in the Important information on your quote, and contact the rental company if anything is unclear.

What to check

• Rental terms: check whether the rental agreement restricts ferry travel. Some rental companies don't allow it, charge extra or require a particular type of cover.
• Insurance: your rental cover may not apply on the ferry. Ask the rental company what cover applies and whether you need more.
• Ferry rules: not every ferry takes vehicles. Some only take certain sizes or types, or carry cars on some routes only. Check with the ferry operator.
• Booking: vehicle space on ferries can sell out. Book your car's space with the ferry operator in advance.
• Island roads: many islands have unsealed roads or sand tracks. The usual road restrictions still apply once you're there.

Spirit of Tasmania

The Spirit of Tasmania carries vehicles between the mainland and Devonport in Tasmania. Some rental companies allow their cars on board and others don't, so check with the rental company first. If it allows it, book your vehicle space with the ferry operator in advance.

Bruny Island (Tasmania)

Not all rental companies allow their cars on Bruny Island. Many of the island's roads are gravel, and standard hire cars are generally restricted to sealed roads under the usual road restrictions. Check with the rental company before you plan the trip.

Magnetic Island (Queensland)

Magnetic Island is off the coast of Townsville. Some rental companies allow their cars on the ferry. Contact your rental company for its rules, conditions and approval.

K'gari (Fraser Island)

Most rental companies don't allow their standard cars on K'gari. Its sand tracks fall outside the road restrictions for standard hire cars.

Kangaroo Island (South Australia)

Some rental companies have specific rules about travel to Kangaroo Island because of its unsealed roads. Check with the rental company and the ferry operator.
