Before you book an electric car, plan where you'll charge it and check how charged it must be when you return it.
Some rental companies offer electric vehicles (EVs), mostly at popular destinations such as airports and cities. Consider these points before you book one.
Charging
Plan your charging stops for long-distance drives or longer hires. Apple Maps and Google Maps can help you find paid and free charging stations in Australia.
Charging time
Charging time depends on the charger. Charging at a standard AC station can take several hours. DC fast chargers are much quicker, so look for them on longer drives.
Range
How far you can drive on a charge depends on the model and how charged the battery is. Check the expected range when you collect the car, and plan your charging stops around it.
Returning the car
Rental companies usually require you to return an EV with a minimum level of charge. The required level varies between rental companies, so check the terms and conditions for your booking. If you return the car below the required level, you may be charged. See unexpected additional charges.
