During Your Trip

Know who to call if something goes wrong, how tolls and fines reach you, and how to drive safely on Australian roads.

If something goes wrong

  • Accident: get to a safe place, turn on your hazard lights and call emergency services if anyone is hurt. Report the accident to the police, record the details and photos, and tell the rental company as soon as you can.
  • Breakdown or a problem with the car: call the rental company's roadside assistance number, which is on your rental agreement and may be on the keys. It can log the problem and arrange help or a tow.
  • Hit an animal: stop only when it's safe and report the strike to the rental company, even if the damage looks minor.

See vehicle breakdowns and accidents and wildlife on the road.

Tolls, parking and fines

  • Tolls: toll roads are cashless, and most are in Sydney, Melbourne and South East Queensland. Most hire cars have an e-Tag, so don't set up your own toll account. The rental company passes on tolls, often with its own fees, so ask how it charges at pick-up. See toll roads and charges.
  • Parking: rules are set by local councils, so read the signs wherever you stop. A parking fine goes to the rental company, which passes it on to you. Show any fine to the staff when you return the car. See parking in Australia.

Drive safely

Keep left, stay within the speed limit and alcohol limits, and stop about every two hours on long drives. Animals are most likely on the road around dawn, dusk and at night. If one appears, brake firmly in a straight line rather than swerving. In remote areas, plan fuel stops and carry water. Road rules are set by each state and territory. See safety tips and road rules and licence requirements.

Your rental agreement still limits where you can drive during the trip, including unsealed roads, ferries and some night driving. See road restrictions and ferries.

Refuel before you return

Most rental companies expect the car back with a full tank unless you pre-purchased fuel. Their refuelling charges are usually higher than service station prices. Ask at pick-up where the nearest service station is, and use a fuel price app to find a good price. See petrol.
