Set in the heart of the Victorian Gold Fields Castlemaine is 150kms north west of Melbourne and 38kms south of the region's capital, Bendigo.
This small country town is rich in local gold history and offers visitors plenty to explore and do. The Goldfields railway opened in 1884 operates at weekends and public holidays with steam engine services to Muckleford and there's even the chance to experience the ride from the engine cabin.
