Decide how to manage your excess

Your rental terms set an excess: the most you pay for covered damage to the car. Excluded damage, or damage while you are breaking the rental agreement, can cost you the full amount. You have three main options:

• Reduce it at the counter: pay the rental company a daily fee to lower your excess. It is often the most expensive option, but the reduced excess applies straight away if the damage is covered.
• Accept the standard excess: no extra cost, but if the car has covered damage the rental company may charge your card up to the full excess.
• Buy separate excess insurance: usually cheaper, including through Prosura on some DriveNow bookings. You pay the rental company first, then make a claim with your insurer for what your policy covers. Some credit cards include similar cover on their own terms.

Whichever you choose, exclusions apply. Damage to windscreens, tyres, the underbody or the roof is commonly excluded, and breaking the rental agreement can void your cover. In those cases you can be liable for the full cost. Our insurance and excess reduction guide compares the options.

Request extras

• GPS and child seats: request them on the vehicle details page when you book. A GPS may not be offered at every location or on one-way hires. Each rental company sets its own charges and conditions for seats.
• Additional drivers: add them at the counter when you collect the car. Each one must be there with their own licence and generally needs to meet the same licence requirements as the main driver.
