First the size is a big factor. If you are planning to spend most of your time in the city, probably best to book a smaller car or an economy SUV. It would be easier to dive around the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Melbourne & Sydney. If you are planning to visit the outback and/or rural areas, make sure your car has unlimited kms and is spacious, an SUV style will give you extra comfort. Look out for special features like GPS and child seat options. Also check that you can fit your luggage in the car as well as the number of people that will be carried.
Some car providers don’t allow drivers under the age of 25 and if allowed a young driver surcharge may apply.
Many car hire providers are now off-airport and require a shuttle to get to the location. Check that there is a free shuttle and opening hours.
Most cars in Australia are automatic, but if you prefer manual, check availability.
A lifesaver if you break down—see if it’s included or costs extra.
If you don’t want to fill up the car yourself, you can pre-purchase fuel from the rental company when you pick up the vehicle. If you prefer to refuel yourself, make sure to fill up near the depot, keep the receipt, and return the car with a full tank to avoid extra charges, which are often higher than local petrol station rates.
