Ensure a smooth start to your journey by following this guide on inspecting and familiarising yourself with your rental campervan.
Once all the paperwork has been completed, one of the branch staff will take you outside to your campervan and will begin the vehicle walk-around and walk-through inspection and demonstration.
If there are any scratches, chips or bumps on the vehicle, the branch staff should already have them documented on the rental agreement history. However, make sure you compare what you observe with what has been noted on the Vehicle Condition Report in the Rental Agreement. Record any changes you wish to make on the Vehicle Condition Report/Rental Agreement in conjunction with a branch staff member. You are free to take any photos or videos of any damage if you want it for your records. Keeping the name of the branch staff member that assisted you helps with following up anything discussed on the collection day, but having the information written on the rental agreement is better.
The staff member will then show you the features of the vehicle, including how to use the important appliances and how to operate and optimise the vehicle’s features. They will also show you the storage areas and the attachments on the exterior of the van. You will also be shown how to set-up for your first night of camping by showing you what to switch on or plug in.
Some camper providers may show you a walk-through instruction video instead of a physical demonstration inside the vehicle.
It is a good idea to create a check list of things you need to do, switch off, take down or close before driving off in the vehicle.
Ask plenty of questions and if you are unsure, get the branch staff member to run-through a particular function again. There are no silly questions - especially if it is your first time renting a campervan or if you are confused by anything in the instruction video.
Your campervan comes fully equipped, so check that you have everything you need. You can ask for such things as extra pillows, extra blankets if the nights are going to be cold and extra picnic chairs if there is not enough for everyone.
Your vehicle should come with a tank full of fuel. If it is a little under, check with the staff to make sure it is noted on the rental agreement.
Once you are confident and ready to start your journey, adjust your seat and mirrors, buckle up and ease on down the road.
