Required Documents for Pickup
What you and every other driver need to bring when you collect your campervan, including licences, translations and international driving permits.
What documents do I need to have at pick-up?
The rental company's staff will be expecting you, so start by giving them your name and your driver’s licence. Anyone in your group who wants to drive on your trip must also show their driver’s licence.
When you arrive at the camper branch, take your luggage inside to the check-in counter. The rental company’s team will look after you from there.
What type of driver’s licence is required to hire a campervan?
Rental companies generally require a current, unrestricted full car driver's licence, although a few accept an Australian green P plate (P2) licence. Bring the physical card. Photocopies aren't accepted. Some rental companies, such as Apollo, require you to have held your full licence for more than 2 years. See our driver's licence guide.
I have an international licence - what else is needed?
If you're driving on an International Driving Permit, you also need to show the full licence issued in your own country. Some rental companies also ask to see a passport: JUCY and Star RV for drivers who aren't Australian or New Zealand citizens, Campervan Village for drivers who aren't Australian citizens, and Camperman and Awesome Campers for anyone with an international licence.
My licence is not in English - can I still be one of the drivers?
Yes. If your driver's licence isn't written in English, bring your full local licence together with an accredited English translation or an International Driving Permit. Most rental companies accept either. Let's Go accepts only an International Driving Permit, and JUCY's and Star RV's terms ask for an accredited English translation, so it's worth checking which one your rental company needs. Can I be one of the drivers if I have restrictions on my licence?
Some rental companies accept Australian provisional (P plate) licences or a restricted New Zealand licence, and others don't. Check before you book. Our driver's licence guide summarises each company's conditions.
Can I add extra items at the time of check-in?
Yes. At check-in, the rental company's staff run through your booking details and what's included, and offer options you may want to add. They'll also talk you through the accident liability options and which cover suits you. This is usually when the rental company takes or holds the bond on your card and may keep your card details on file.
Card and bond requirements vary between rental companies, including which cards are accepted, whose name must be on the card and whether that person must be at pick-up.
