Vehicle Breakdown

During Your Trip

When things go wrong or stop working with the van, what do you do to get help? Read on to find out more

How Likely are Breakdowns?

Whilst DriveNow are confident that our vehicle providers follow the correct procedures for checking and maintaining their vehicles, there is always going to be the risk of having a vehicle issue whilst on hire. Given that campervans and motorhomes are combining a car and a house there are issues related to both that can arise. As the vehicles are almost constantly on the road you can also expect a higher number of kilometres on the odometer which comes with increased risk of vehicle issues for older vehicles.

Common Issues

  • Engine issues: long days of driving in the Australian summer can lead to both minor and major engine problems. To mitigate the risk our vehicle providers, provide regular maintenance and oil changes to their vehicles.
  • Battery: given the usage of power in the vehicles while travelling problems with the vehicle battery can happen throughout the hire and may compound with other utility issues.
  • Awnings: vehicles that come with an attached awning are rare and the reason for that is they are one of the most common parts to be damaged. falling branches and forgetting to wind up the awning before driving are the biggest culprits.
  • Flat tyre: Flat tyres can occur even when staying on sealed roads but are more likely when travelling to your camp site, drive slow through parks to your campsite.
  • Air conditioning: air-conditioning issues can lead to or be caused by problems with the vehicle’s batteries or the power connection

What to Do?

Each of our vehicle providers will have their own contact number for on road support. Some of these include access to the local Royal Auto club or an equivalent. Whenever a vehicle issue happens during your hire, its important to call the on road care team of your vehicle provider as soon as possible. They are experts in their vehicles and will explain and direct you through the process of getting you back on the road as quick as possible. The on road care team may be able to troubleshoot the problem for you over the phone or may source a repair and direct you to a local repairer.

Expert Tip

Most vehicle issues can be avoided by safe driving practices and a thorough check of the vehicle prior to leaving the depot. For issues that still happen, call the vehicle provider as soon as possible for directions, speaking calmly and clearly can help them get you back on the road as soon as possible.
