Travelling with Children

Are we there yet? In this guide, we share some regulations and tips on travelling with children, so that everyone has a wonderful experience! Read on to find out more

Is a Campervan Holiday Suitable for the Family?

Having a family holiday adventure in a campervan can be so much fun for you and the kids. The excitement of a road-trip exploring Australia’s outback or seaside coastal towns will provide memories that will last forever.

When you book a 6-berth motorhome, the seat belts in the main cabin will be around the dining table which allows the children to face each. This seating is perfect for playing board games. The kids will be able to entertain themselves while Mum and Dad drive.

Kids that have always wanted a bunk bed will love the motorhome’s loft sleeping area above the driver's cabin where they can climb up the ladder to their private little hideaway.

Before You Decide to Travel

  • Make sure you have a vehicle that is suitable and the right size for your family.
  • Do you want running water and a shower and toilet in your campervan?
  • A cabin with air-conditioning or heating is recommended if you are travelling in a hot or humid climate or a cold one respectively.
  • Have you booked or considered which holiday parks and powered sites you may use?
  • Is your holiday park close to shops?

On The Day of Vehicle Collection

We suggest you check-in online prior to the day of your pick-up. This will save you time at the branch when you pick up the campervan. When picking up or dropping off your campervan, make sure your kids are in a safe area or inside the branch while vehicles are travelling in and out of the depot.

If anyone suffers from travel sickness, the forward-facing seating may be more comfortable for them.

Travelling will be easier if you pack the kids’ bags so they can access their things without removing their seat belts while the vehicle is moving. We suggest you pack water bottles, snacks and other items together with their electronic devices.

What Do l Need to Consider when Travelling with the Family?

  • Pack a power-board so you can charge all your electronic devices – the kids and yours. Do you need a child-seat, or will you bring your own?
  • Do you need to hire a stroller or pram? Hire for Baby can accommodate your needs and items are delivered to your location.
  • Would it make your trip more comfortable to have extra furniture/accessories such as chairs, tables, awnings to use outside your campervan?
  • Is the holiday park you are staying at ‘kid-friendly’ with plenty of activities?
  • When taking a driving break on your way to your destination, find a park with a playground so the kids can burn off some energy.
  • When parking, look for an area out of the sun to keep the vehicle, and you and your family, cool.
  • Under each State and Territory law in Australia, all passengers must wear a seat belt while travelling inside a vehicle. So, the law requires that while the campervan is moving, all passengers must be seated and only in seats with seat belts, and they must be attached. Parents are responsible for children under the age of 16. Police may impose fines and licence demerit points for failure to follow these rules

Which Child Seat is Suitable for Us?

  • Rear facing child seat – suitable for new-borns up to children of 4 years.
  • Forward facing child seat – suitable for children from 6months to 7 years.
  • Booster seat – suitable for children 4 to 7 years.

Entertainment Ideas when Packing

Here are a few things you may wish to pack to keep the kids busy and occupied

  • DVD’s – Your motorhome may come with a flat screen DVD player, so bring along your favourite movies.
  • Games – Board games are great for that rainy day.
  • Cards – For the kids and the adults, a deck of cards can come in handy.
  • Devices – Phones and iPad along with the charges
  • Camera – Capture those special travel moments with your camera.
  • Toys – Pack your kids’ favourite toys and teddy bears
  • Colouring Books – Keep the kids busy and pack their pencils and colouring books.
  • Child Seat – Did you bring your own or do you need to hire a child seat?
  • Beach towels – Even though your vehicle will come with towels, it is a good idea to bring extras. Many holiday parks will have swimming pools or water parks for the kids to have fun in.
  • Scooters – Fold up scooters can be a great way for the kids to cruise around the holiday park grounds.
  • Books – Bring your favourite story-time books.
  • First Aid Kit – Bring a mini first-aid kit to patch up any bumps or scratches.
  • Interactive map – Let the kids become the navigator and be your guide.
Expert Tip

If you have inflatable toys such as paddle boards or water mattress, bring an electric air pump or air blow-gun - it will save you a lot of time and effort.
