Tips for a Good Night's Sleep

During Your Trip

Sleeping well ensures you'll be able to enjoy every day you're on the road, so here's some advice and tips of making the most of your shuteye time

Anxious about your first night away in a campervan? Here are some tips for getting a good night’s sleep during your campervan hire:

  • Park on flat terrain: When choosing your campsite try to select a site that’s as flat as possible so you aren’t sleeping lopsided.
  • Heating/cooling: if available, use your air conditioning or heating to get the right temperature before going to bed.
  • Ear plugs: if travelling in a 4 or 6 berth the beds are very close to each other. We recommend ear plugs if you have any snorers in your group!
  • Curtains: There will be curtains available for the windows in the main cabin of the vehicle but there may or may not be one for the opening to the driver cabin. If your vehicle doesn’t have a curtain to the driver cabin, you may want to use a makeshift curtain to block the sunlight from the windscreen.
  • Open windows: if your vehicle has fly screens in the windows and the weathers not too cold you should consider leaving the windows open for some fresh air.
  • Lock doors: Campsites in Australia are generally very safe places to stay (some even have security guards). For a worry-free sleep, be safe and lock the doors.
  • Pack up outside: Try not to leave any loose items like camp chairs or tables outside overnight. Strong winds can send those flying into your vehicle or nearby vehicles. This also protects them from being stolen.
  • Cooking: try not to cook anything smelly inside the vehicle. Use outdoor BBQ facilities when available or bring an air freshener.
  • Torches: have a torch ready by the door in case you need to go to the toilet during the night. Some parks may not be well lit, so a torch is essential for quickly navigating your way to the toilet block and back to bed.
