Accidents

During Your Trip

In this guide, find out what steps to follow and who to contact if you happen to be involved in an accident whilst out on the road

What do I do if I have an Accident in my Campervan or Motorhome?

The first thing is to contact the campervan provider to report the accident – you must do this within 24 hours of the accident occurring. The number for roadside assistance is provided at time of pick-up and on the vehicle keys. They will be able to offer help and guide you from there.

All required steps are listed on the rental agreement you signed at pick-up. See below some guidelines.

  • Record the Time/Date/Location
  • Collect the names, addresses, telephone numbers, and drivers’ licences of any third parties, contact details of any witnesses, registration numbers of all vehicles involved
  • Take as many photos as is reasonable to show the damages, positioning of vehicles, any street signs as necessary, and registrations involved
  • Record the name of the other party’s insurance company
  • You must not accept blame or insist that any other party is at fault
  • Notify the nearest police station within 24 hours of the accident

Safe Driving Tips & How to Avoid an Accident

  • Allow extra distance between other vehicles. If driving in a convoy and the group gets separated, pull over where safe and regroup.
  • If driving slowly, pull over where it is safe and let faster traffic pass.
  • Take regular rest breaks.
  • Look out for animal hazards.
  • Get to know the vehicle, road rules, signs and markings before you drive.
  • Taking photos or checking directions? Pull over somewhere safe.
  • Fatigue causes many crashes in Australia. When driving long distances, stop and rest every 2 hours.
  • Take note and follow the recommended speed signs on winding roads.
  • Take care and be alert when driving to avoid a collision with either a native, farm or domestic animal. It is best to drive during the day and avoid dusk until dawn. Many animals are nocturnal or are more active when the sun is low and the temperature is cooler.
  • Campervans & motorhomes can be double the height and length of sedan vehicles. Keep an eye out for height indicator signs at low level crossings or car parks. Remember that overhanging tree branches may also affect where you can drive.
Expert Tip
  • Stay calm and think clearly
  • If anyone is injured call 000
