Number of days

Campervan hire prices are based on the number of days, not on 24-hour periods as they are when you hire a car. The day you collect your campervan is day 1, whatever time of day you collect it.

Minimal rental requirement

During peak holiday periods, rental companies may set a ‘minimum rental requirement’ of 7, 10 or 14 days for particular campervans and motorhomes.

If there's a minimum rental requirement of 7 days and you select only 5 days, the price shown will be the 7-day price. You're welcome to travel for only 5 days, but you'll pay the price for 7 days. If this happens, you'll see an offer of the extra days, and you can change your dates from 5 to 7 days for the same price, subject to availability.

What is included in the price

Your campervan price will usually include the rental cost, the standard basic liability option, living equipment (sheets, duvets or blankets, pillows, pillow-cases, towels), kitchen equipment (cutlery, crockery, cooking utensils, cooking equipment), an on-road assistance helpline and GST. Many quotes include unlimited kilometres, except for 4WD campers, but some rental companies include a set number of kilometres per day and charge for extra kilometres.

Inclusions vary between rental companies. Some also include an additional driver, a gas refill, or a picnic table and chairs. DriveNow's prices include all taxes and levies, and we don't charge booking fees. Our guide to bedding, personal and vehicle inclusions lists the equipment usually supplied with the van.

What is not included in the price

These costs are generally not part of the rental price:

• overnight camping costs, national park entry fees and tourist attractions
• fuel, tolls, food and groceries
• liability or excess reduction options
• optional extras, such as an LPG refill, outdoor chairs and table, baby or booster seats, GPS, or an additional driver where it isn't included
• amendment fees charged by the rental company

Some fees are paid to the rental company when you collect the vehicle, such as a one-way fee or a public holiday fee. See charges at pick-up. Charges for things like cleaning, refuelling or damage can also apply after you return the vehicle, as explained in unexpected additional charges.

Checking the charges for your quote

One-way journey

One-way journeys may also have a minimum rental requirement. It's there so you can travel long distances safely and at your leisure.

For example, Sydney to Perth can have a minimum rental requirement of 14 days, and Cairns to Perth 28 days, because of the distance and estimated driving time. Check the minimum for your route when you search.

Most rental companies charge a one-way fee, unless there's a special promotion for that route.
