Campervan Relocations
A low rental rate comes with a fixed route and a deadline. Here's how to work out whether a relocation fits your trip.
A campervan relocation moves a vehicle to the branch where the rental company needs it. You choose from the available offers, each with its own pick-up location, destination, dates and kilometre allowance.
See current Australian relocation offers for availability. This guide helps you decide whether to request one and explains important conditions for Australian relocations.
Is a relocation right for your trip?
A relocation suits you if you can travel at short notice, follow the offered route and keep your other arrangements flexible. The rental company can change the vehicle or cancel the relocation if its business needs change. Flexible flights and accommodation reduce the money you could lose if that happens.
If you've already booked flights, need a particular layout or want several days in one place, compare ordinary campervan hire. You can search with different pick-up and return locations for a one-way trip, then choose dates and a vehicle that fit your plans.
Will the route fit the time available?
The offer's dates and kilometre allowance determine how much time you'll have for stops along the way. These details will help you judge whether the trip is realistic:
- The pick-up and return branches, the earliest collection date and the date you must arrive by.
- The minimum and maximum hire days, plus the collection and return times. You'll need time for the vehicle handover too.
- The included kilometres and the charge for going over them. Sightseeing and campsite detours count towards your total distance.
- Whether you can reach each overnight stop without rushing or driving after dark.
- Whether an extra day is available and what it costs. A longer trip needs approval before you plan around it.
A cheap daily rate is little help if the deadline leaves no time for the places you want to visit. A shorter itinerary gives you more time at each stop.
Will the vehicle suit everyone travelling?
Before accepting a vehicle, you'll need to confirm it has the passenger seats, beds and any child-seat positions you need. It's worth asking what happens if the rental company changes the model, especially if you need a particular layout. Our child seat guide explains what to check for your family.
Your offer's terms explain who can drive and which licences are accepted. These conditions can differ from a standard hire. Wait for booking confirmation before making other commitments.
What will the whole trip cost?
The daily rental rate is only part of your budget. Your offer and its terms explain:
- The total rental charge, any extra days, excess kilometres and optional equipment.
- Any payment required to secure the booking, whether it's credited towards the rental, and when the balance is due.
- The separate security bond and the card you need for it. You'll need enough money available for the bond as well as your trip.
- Fuel, campsites, tolls and any ferry crossing. A fuel allowance applies only when the offer includes one, and reimbursement has conditions.
- The amount you could owe for damage, the options to reduce it and the damage those options don't cover.
- Cancellation charges and what happens to your other travel costs if the relocation is withdrawn.
Australian THL relocation conditions
THL's Relocation: For Your Information terms cover Apollo, Britz, maui and Mighty relocations in Australia from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027. Read them with the Rental Vehicle Agreement. Where the two differ, the relocation document says its conditions take precedence. Some relocation rules are stricter than those for a standard hire.
Important conditions in that document include:
- The security deposit is $1,000, paid by Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card. The money is taken from your account and refunded if you meet the return conditions.
- Travel over the included kilometre allowance costs 55 cents per kilometre. An extra day costs $75 plus any extras, adds 250 kilometres and needs approval because it depends on availability and business needs.
- Fuel reimbursement requires itemised receipts showing what you bought. Credit-card receipts alone aren't enough. The allowance must be on your contract, and the return conditions still apply.
- Unsealed roads are not allowed, including for a 4WD relocation. Night driving is not allowed outside towns and cities with street lighting.
- Vehicle models or bookings can change or be cancelled if business needs change. THL charges $50 if you cancel a confirmed relocation or don't collect it. If THL cancels, that fee doesn't apply and it refunds money paid to THL. The document says third-party booking conditions can differ, so check your confirmation too.
For a Tasmanian relocation, confirm whether the offer includes a ferry place or an allowance before buying a crossing yourself. THL recommends accepting its pre-booked ferry crossing to avoid losing that fare if the relocation is cancelled.
These conditions apply to the Australian THL brands and period above. Check the terms for your offer if you are travelling later, booking another rental company or considering New Zealand. The live offers page has separate country tabs.
