Younger drivers intending to hire a campervan may find some extra conditions and charges apply.
Some suppliers may also have maximum age restrictions.
Hiring a campervan is an affordable way to travel and visit so many parts of Australia. From remote locations to untouched coastlines and the city lights, you can travel at your leisure and create your own itinerary in your campervan.
We want everyone to experience a campervan holiday or weekend getaway, here is what you need to know when it comes to age restrictions.
To drive a campervan, motorhome or 4WD camper, most companies require you to be 21 years of age or older and you must hold a full unrestricted driver's licence. If you wish to be an additional driver, you must also meet these licence requirements and you will also (along with the main driver) need your driver's licence at check-in and to have your details added to the campervan rental agreement. Some campervan companies also require a driver of 21 years or older to have a minimum of two years driving experience.
There are some campervan companies that allow drivers to be 18 years of age or older with a full driver's license. Other companies may lower the rental age to 18 for specific vehicles. Some examples of suppliers and specific vehicle models that can be driven by an 18+ driver with a full driver’s licence include: Mighty Campers models Highball and Double Down, and Cheapa Campa models Hi-Top and Endeavour.
If you are 18 years or older and hold an Australian Green P Plate (P2) licence, you can hire a vehicle with Camperman, Hippie Campers, Jucy, Spaceships and Travellers Autobarn.
When making your booking on DriveNow, the minimum age requirement for your selected vehicle will be displayed in Step 3 on the booking page. The driver's licence requirements are displayed and can be viewed on the booking page under additional information.
Many of the campervan providers may not have a maximum age requirement. Some providers may ask drivers over 75 years of age to provide a supporting medical certificate. The maximum age for Cruisin Motorhomes is 79 years; for Travellers Autobarn it is 80 years; for Camperman it is 85 years and for Awesome Campers it is 86 years.
