Auckland's majestic scenery is artwork in itself.

Whether it is the sprawling beaches in Mission Bay or Long Bay, or the grassy expanses of One Tree Hill, there are marvellous feats of nature in just about every direction.

If you're the type who also appreciates the masterpieces of human endeavour, however, you won't be disappointed - the City of Sails has a number of fantastic art venues, some more well-known than others.

Next time you're in the city, why not check out these galleries for some inspiration?

Auckland Art Gallery

This is the big one when it comes to Auckland art. After recently undergoing major renovations, the Auckland Art Gallery is refreshed and ready to welcome visitors from around the globe.

There are no excuses not to visit it next time you're in Auckland as general entry is free.

With four levels of classical and contemporary pieces from both New Zealand and abroad, it's easy to lose track of time and spend a day appreciating the art on display.

If you're visiting with the kids, there is also a learning centre with plenty of hands-on activities and resources, so they can create their own masterpieces to take home.

When you finally decide it's time to leave, you can grab a snack at the café with views of Albert Park, or pick up a souvenir from their quirky gift shop.

TSB Bank Wallace Arts Centre

Auckland's 'hipster' art gallery for those who wish to stray off the beaten track, the TSB Wallace Arts Centre is growing in popularity and it's easy to see why.

Based in a homestead steeped in history and only opened in 2010, it is tucked away in the quiet neighbourhood of Hillsborough.

The building looks deceptively compact from the outside, but inside you'll find a unique collection of artwork focussing on Kiwi artists.

When you need a bit of fresh air, you can head out and take a stroll around the garden, filled with unique sculptures and perfect photo opportunities.

Entrance is also free at this gallery, and the sumptuous cafe is definitely worth checking out for some delicious sandwiches and drinks.

Waiheke Community Art Gallery

It is often said that there is not much to do on Waiheke Island, apart from visiting the countless beaches and vineyards.

Fortunately, the island does boast its own gallery, a perfect place to appreciate some art after sipping on your vino.

Most of the pieces in the gallery are actually by the residents of the island, so you can see for yourself how living there can inspire the mind.

When you're done admiring Waiheke's proud artistic heritage, you can enjoy the island's natural beauty or head to one of the many neat cafes for some tasty delights.

Parnell Gallery

Located in the trendy suburb of Parnell, this boutique gallery fits in perfectly with its surroundings.

After enjoying a day visiting the shops, restaurants and cafes on Parnell Road, why not check out this venue for some authentic Kiwi art?

There are unique exhibitions focussing on specific artists, and you can even purchase some pieces to take home with you.

Artport

There is always an opportunity to enjoy quality New Zealand artwork, even in literally your last few minutes in the country.

If you find yourself having to kill some time at the airport before departure, check out the Artport gallery for some last-minute souvenirs to remind of your time here.
