It's easy to lose yourself in the picturesque surrounds of Christchurch.

Whether you're taking in the sights and smells of its numerous wineries and gardens, or enjoying a leisurely punt down the Avon River, there are plenty of ways to immerse yourself in the Garden City.

However, if you do manage to find a spare weekend in Christchurch with a car rental, why not check out one of the city's famed local markets?

Checking out the local produce, gifts, arts and crafts can be a great way to spend a morning or afternoon.

So get your car hire sorted, gather the troops and head to one of these markets!

Christchurch Farmers' Market

This is 'the' original Christchurch market, according to Christchurch Events website BeThere.co.nz.

Held every Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm at the Riccarton House on 16 Kahu Road, it's the perfect place to discover the best food and drink that the Canterbury region has to offer.

There is a plethora of stalls, selling a range of products from walnuts to lemons and honey to cheese.

You can even treat your inner meat lover at the bacon stall!

Opawa Farmers' Market

Every Sunday, from nine in the morning till noon, the Opawa Farmers' Market boasts a selection of local produce, most of it organic and free of chemicals.

Stock up on your eggs, bread and cheese here for a welcome change to the usual supermarket fare.

The market can be found at 275 Fifield Terrace, just a short drive from central Christchurch.

Lincoln Farmers' and Craft Market

Looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city?

Lincoln town, less than a half-hour drive from Christchurch, has its very own weekend market.

Marvel at the selection of fruit, vegetables, sweets and treats on offer, before picking up a unique piece of artwork as a souvenir.

The market is held on Gerald Street, from 10 am till 1 pm, until the end of August.
