Taste Wellington on a plate

Wellington will be working hard to serve up its best dishes during the Wellington on a Plate festival.

Wellington’s a delicious city all year round, but it’s about to get even tastier when the Wellington on a Plate festival kicks off this August.Wellington will be working hard to serve up its best dishes during the Wellington on a Plate festival.

From Friday August 9 until Sunday August 25, the city will be celebrating all things edible, so if you’ve ever wanted a reason to visit Wellington – this is it.

Getting there is a breeze when you pick up a car rental from Auckland or fly in directly. Landing in Wellington is always a buzz, not many airports in the world start and end with water – Wellington’s sits on an isthmus and given the local geography you tend to be often up for a windy landing – all good fun and quite safe! Now, let’s get back to the food!

Over the two weeks, apart from putting on their best efforts to please visiting foodies, over 100 of the region’s finest restaurants, cafes, bars and bistros will be taking part in DINE Wellington and offering great deals on divine lunch and dinner set menus.

Another event to watch out for is the Burger Wellington competition. Dozens of eateries will compete to take out the title of the tastiest burger in what has affectionately become known as ‘the battle of the buns’. This is one you get to participate in just by trying what they have on offer and texting through your rating out of ten. Not only do you get a burger in a beautiful city, you’ll go in the draw to win a night out to boot!

The steaks are high – and potentially rare – as a Plate Award will be decided during the festival as well, which will go to the eatery that the judges feel best reflects the flavour of this culinary capital.

If you really want to get involved, sign up for the master class with a line up of award winning chefs, or even try out the Bake Club to test your baking skills.

Just remember – calories don’t count when you’re on holiday!
