🏔️ Rocky Mountain RV Road Trip: Denver to Albuquerque in 18 Days

When you've invested the time and money to get to North America, a 5 day road trip isn't going to cut it. This is a trip built for travellers who want to do it properly — five national parks, one of the most spectacular drives on the continent, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a finish in a city that genuinely surprises you. All of it in 18 days, in your own RV, at your own pace.

The route runs south and west from Denver, Colorado through the Rocky Mountains and San Juan range, before crossing into New Mexico for a cultural and culinary finale in Taos, Santa Fe and Albuquerque. You pick up your RV in Denver and drop it in Albuquerque — no backtracking, every day a new view.

• Days 1–2: Denver — settle in, stock up, Red Rocks, the Mile High city
• Days 3–4: Rocky Mountain National Park — Trail Ridge Road, Bear Lake, wildlife
• Day 5: Glenwood Springs — Glenwood Canyon drive, world's largest hot springs pool
• Days 6–7: Black Canyon of the Gunnison — Colorado's most dramatic (and least crowded) gorge
• Days 8–9: Ouray & the Million Dollar Highway — arguably the best mountain drive in America
• Days 10–11: Mesa Verde National Park — 700-year-old cliff dwellings of the Ancestral Puebloans

• Day 12: Pagosa Springs — San Juan mountain scenery and geothermal hot springs
• Days 13–14: Great Sand Dunes National Park — the strangest landscape in Colorado
• Day 15: Taos, New Mexico — Taos Pueblo UNESCO World Heritage Site, Rio Grande Gorge
• Day 16: Santa Fe — galleries, green chile and the oldest state capital in the US
• Days 17–18: Albuquerque — Old Town, Sandia Mountains, Route 66 and journey's end

✨ Why This Route Works

The Colorado loop is not the Mighty 5. There's no overlap with Utah's famous national park circuit — this is entirely different country, with an entirely different feel. Where the Mighty 5 is red rock and canyon country, this route is alpine lakes, ancient cliff dwellings, towering gorges and high desert. The contrast keeps every day feeling fresh.

The Million Dollar Highway between Ouray and Silverton deserves special mention. It's a stretch of US-550 through the San Juan Mountains that most international visitors have never heard of — narrow, high, guardrail-free in sections, with views that will make you pull over at every bend. It regularly appears on American bucket lists. It should be on yours.

Mesa Verde is unlike any national park you've visited. It's an outdoor archaeology museum — cliff dwellings built into canyon walls by the Ancestral Puebloan people, abandoned around 1300 CE for reasons archaeologists are still debating. The ranger-guided tours bring it to life in a way that photography simply cannot. Book your cliff dwelling tour through Recreation.gov as early as possible — they sell out fast for summer dates.

And then there's the finish. Crossing into New Mexico, the landscape shifts and the culture deepens. Taos Pueblo has been continuously inhabited for over a thousand years. Santa Fe's Canyon Road gallery walk is genuinely world-class. Albuquerque's Sandia Mountains turn watermelon-pink at sunset. It's a proper ending to a proper trip.

 

🚐 Planning Essentials

• Vehicle: A mid-size motorhome (6–8 metres) is ideal for this route — easier through mountain passes, fits every campground, and handles the terrain without drama. You don't need any bigger.

• Best time: Late May through mid-September. Trail Ridge Road closes in winter; Mesa Verde cliff dwelling tours run May–October only
• Campground bookings: Recreation.gov is your platform for all national park campgrounds. Set up your account before you leave home and book as early as possible — peak season fills months ahead
• Driving: Roads are paved throughout. Mountain passes require a lower gear on descents. Speed limits are in miles per hour — 55 mph is 88 km/h. Fuel up whenever you're below half a tank in southern Colorado
• Altitude: Denver sits at 1,600m. Rocky Mountain NP peaks above 3,700m. Drink plenty of water and take the first day or two gently
