Let's Keepit a secret - one helluva road trip to a cool NSW destination

HITTING the highway for a six hour road trip from Sydney and heading for Tamworth in country NSW, Lake Keepit is the best kept secret in the land! So lets ‘keepit’ a secret!

Having talked to so many caravanners, campervanners and campers, we have discovered it is their mission to go where no others have been before ... or they have a hidden treasure they visit every year, but refuse to reveal where it is. Well we found ours. But stupidly, we are telling everyone all about it.

Even though Lake Keepit has been around for many years, it has slipped under the radar for the most part until now. With new managers on site it’s a park and lake that is moving ahead in leaps and bounds. Owned by the State Government, it recently had a lot of time to do some work and had a lot of money spent on it. And it's not at all off-the-beaten path: it's only 40 minutes from Tamworth, 25 minutes from Gunnedah, six hours from Sydney and four hours from Newcastle. The lake is surrounded by kilometres of pastoral and timber country that creates a picturesque setting for the lake.

If it's water sports you love, then Lake Keepit is the ideal spot for you. Boating, fishing, waterskiing or wakeboarding, kayaking, swimming or just simple relaxation on the edge of the lake. Every water sport imaginable is right there - even a sailing club. And don't sweat it if you don’t have your own fishing or sailing boat as you can hire them, and same goes for bikes, canoes and kayaks. As for accommodation, you don’t necessarily have to stay in the caravan park's sites or cabins, as a great option is going bush camping. Kangaroos are plentiful in the area and there are loads of bird watching opportunities.

The lake is also home to a gliding club and airstrip, so if you are thrill-seekers like us, you can take in a wicked glider ride over the area. For the kids there is a new water park and BMX track, and land-based fun activities like tennis, volleyball and bike riding. Great bush walks abound the area so there will not be a moment of boredom when taking some time out at beautiful Lake Keepit. PETER "SPIDA" EVERITT The Great Australian Doorstep Series 3 is now airing on 7TWO on Australian television.
