Undara Lava Tubes

Drive three hours west of Cairns to Gulf Savanna country. This outback experience is unlike any other. Venture through ancient lava caves and tunnels. These mysterious formations are the result of a volcano eruption about 300 million years ago. An expert tour guide will point out unique wonders like Indigenous rock art. There are even tree roots hanging from the ceilings, searching for water. An underground wonderland!

Cooktown

People call it “the last frontier” of Far North Queensland. It’s not until you drive 30 seconds out of the centre of town that you gain a true appreciation for how rugged and remote this place is. One of the best places to go off-road and explore is the stunning Trevethan Falls. Swing on a rope or simply relax in the cool, refreshing waters. Just make sure you ask the locals in town for directions!

Etty Bay

Drive about half an hour off the Bruce Highway near Innisfail and you’ll encounter pretty scenery and a quiet beachside setting. It’s the one natural settings where you’re almost guaranteed to spot a cassowary. (Hint: you can often spot these magnificent creatures roaming the area around midday!)

Daintree rainforest

It’s the only place in the world where two UNESCO World Heritage Sites meet - the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. Lose all track of time as your relax in the Daintree. Visit pristine sites like Cape Tribulation and Noah Beach. Get adventurous with a hike up the 1300m Thornton Peak to admire the glorious views or snack on some refreshing ice cream at the Daintree Ice Cream Company. It’s a beautiful spot!

The Tablelands

The Tablelands is one of the less well travelled roads of Far North Queensland, but it’s worth every kilometre. Lake Eacham is a great spot for a swim, while Lake Barrine is a great place for a wildlife cruise and warm tea and scones. The waterfalls circuit is hugely popular with tourists. The stunning and easy to access Millaa Millaa Falls has become a famous drawcard since appearing in a TV hair commercial.
