Your home on wheels can be known by the term campervan, motorhome, RV (recreational vehicle) or a 4 wheel drive camper when describing the vehicle. Whilst there are exceptions, a set of rule-of-thumb definitions could include:

Campervans – Typically the compact van style of vehicle, campervans come in many different shapes and sizes which includes mini vans that have been configured into a campervan. Campervans can accommodate 2 adults comfortably, 2 adults + 1 child or up to 4 adults in some Hi-Top models.

Motorhomes – Motorhome models are designed and configured to be spacious and offer the many comforts of home. Motorhomes will have a long-wheel base allowing the vehicle to be larger in size, giving you more room inside the vehicle, having walk-through access from the driver’s cabin into the main cabin area and the higher roof allows a plenty of head room.

Recreational Vehicles (RVs) – RV is a popular term used in North American to describe motorised vehicles used for camping and touring. Larger in size, a RV is your home on wheels with large living quarters and all of the mod-cons of home. Capable of towing a trailer or car behind it, a RV is suitable for the whole family and can accommodate up to 7 travellers. RV can be used to refer to campervans, motorhomes or 4WD campers.

4WD Campers – 4 wheel drive campervans are generally a 4WD diesel engine. Designed and built for the adventurous traveller, 4WD campers have the ability to take you offroad.

Yes, for December to March in particular, with Christmas, January and Easter the peak weeks, and for the Victorian school holidays. Events such as the Australian Grand Prix in March and AFL Gather Round road trips also lift demand. Start looking six to eight months ahead for those dates.

The earlier you book, the more choice you have of vehicle size and layout, and the sooner you can lock in campsites, some of which ask for your van's length. There's no booking window that guarantees the lowest price, as our guide to booking early or late explains.

If you're new to campervan travel, these are the main steps:

1. Search and compare. Enter your travel dates and pick-up and drop-off locations on DriveNow. You can compare vehicles, inclusions and prices from different rental companies side by side. Our guide to DriveNow's comparison tools shows how.
2. Choose your vehicle. Pick a campervan that fits your group, budget and travel style. See types of campervans below for the main categories.
3. Book. Complete your booking online. Depending on how far away your pick-up date is, you'll pay a deposit or the full amount, as explained in making payment. Decide whether you want insurance and excess reduction at this stage.
4. Collect. Pick up your campervan from the rental company's branch. Staff will walk you through the vehicle, explain its features and complete the rental agreement. Bring your driver's licence and the other documents you need, and a credit card for the security bond.
5. Travel. Stay at caravan parks, holiday parks or permitted free camps, depending on your vehicle and preferences. Our overnight parking guide explains where you can stay.
6. Return. Drop off the vehicle at the agreed location, with a full tank of fuel and in the same condition you received it, to avoid additional charges.

Most rentals will include all of your bedding and linen, basic kitchen equipment, general equipment, cleaning supplies, and roadside vehicle support. Optional extras items like camping table and camping chairs, child seats, additional driver and additional protection may be added.

Standard cancellation and change terms depend on the supplier you choose. Full details appear online prior to completing a reservation and before payment is required, and again on your booking confirmation once you complete a booking.
