Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary
THIS delightful patch of natural bushland located at Currumbin, just a short drive in your DriveNow booked hire car north of the Gold Coast airport, provides a peaceful break from the often manic go-go-go of the Gold Coast. It is home to more than 1400 native Australian animals, including the beautiful Australian lorikeets which first made this place famous.
Originally called Currumbin Bird Sanctuary, the park changed its name in 1995 to better reflect the diversity of animals on display. It now has 100 species of mammals, reptiles and birds including crocodiles, snakes, echidnas and kangaroos. Feeding the birds, however, is still the highlight of the day, with the park becoming a blaze of colour as the multi-coloured feathered friends flock for their daily feast.
There are several other wildlife shows and displays held at set times during the day, while the newest attraction, Wild Island, combines wildlife education and entertainment in an interactive adventure playground.
The Sanctuary is also involved in wildlife research and conservation projects, including the Community Wildlife Hospital that treats sick and orphaned animals brought to them by the public.
For visitors who want a more hands-on encounter, there are several new tours available. The Wildnight Adventure tour is a journey into the nocturnal world of Australian marsupials combined with a traditional Aboriginal dance performance; while the Behind the Scenes tour gives visitors a chance to witness some of the locations rarely seen by the public, including the animal hospital, the food preparation area and even into the dingo’s lair.
