Common Questions

Do I need to be over 21 to hire a car in Madrid? Like all other countries in Europe, you will need to be over the age of 21 and hold a full licence in order to rent a car in Madrid.

Those between the ages of 21 - 25 may also find they are subject to a young driver's surcharge. This amount can vary depending on the supplier, so it is advisable to check your final price breakdown before locking in any confirmation agreements. Include a comment in your booking and our Reservations team will follow this up on your behalf.

A handy tip is to keep your passport handy, particularly if your licence isn't printed with a photo as this may be required for identification purposes.

What forms of payment can I use?

Credit Card. As an imprint (deposit) is required for insurance purposes the only form of payment that credit card companies accept is credit card.

Can I reduce my liability in the event of an accident?

Yes. All car rental companies will offer you car excess or waiver insurance reduction options by paying a daily fee. Many travel insurance policies also provide this service (worth checking out). Speak with your rental company when you collect the vehicle - DriveNow does not sell insurance options.

What Driving license do I require?

A full car license is required. You will only require an international driver's permit (IDP) if your licence is printed in an alphabet other than the Latin one.

Those whose licence is printed in the Latin alphabet are permitted to drive on Spanish roads for up to a year using only their home country's licence.

A good tip is to always carry your passport when driving and also when collecting your vehicle.

What are the speed limits in Madrid? People tend to drive quite fast along Spanish roads, and while the official speed limit is 120kmh, it is not unusual to see cars travelling at speeds exceeding 160kmh.

The Civil Guard are the Spanish equivalent of the traffic police. Radar traps are becoming increasingly common and you might find yourself liable for on the spot fines if you are caught exceeding the speed limit.

On the open road, the speed limit is 90 - 100kmh and about town this reduces to 50kmh.
