Our Expert Tips on Picking Up or Dropping Off your Campervan in Melbourne
Our Customer Service Team share their tips on collecting and returning your vehicle in Melbourne
- Allow plenty of time to travel to the branch, Melbourne’s traffic is busiest between 7-9am and 4-6pm.
- There is generally no customer parking available inside the branch. We recommend using one of the many secure parking locations nearby (long term airport parking).
- On the day of pickup, consider how long you will need to drive to reach your first night's accommodation. Arriving a day early and staying in accommodation overnight before picking up your vehicle is well worth considering if you have a long journey to Melbourne.
- For anything extras you think you may need, Bunnings, BCF and Anaconda have stores within easy reach on the Melbourne branch.
- Notable toll roads around Melbourne are the City Link (M1) and the East Link (M3). Toll Roads in Melbourne are collected electronically via Linkt or Eastlink
- The default speed limit in Melbourne for built up areas where no signs are displayed is 50km/h. Excluding School zones and shopping strips which have a default speed limit of 40kmph where no signs are displayed.
- Memorize your vehicle height and watch out for low bridges around Melbourne. Visit the Vic Roads height clearance page - Height Clearance Under Overhead Structures
- There are plenty of service station close to the suppliers' branches at Melbourne Airport and Somerton to refuel your vehicle before dropping off.
Additional general information about picking up or returning your campervan is available for you also. Our Campervan Hire Handbook also covers a range of topics to help you plan, book and experience your campervan adventure

Where can we stay during the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach Classic?
Where can we stay during the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach Classic?
Attending the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach in a campervan is a great way to experience the Surf Coast.
The best places to stay in a campervan for the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach are the caravan parks in Torquay, Jan Juc, and Anglesea — all close to the event, with proper facilities and legal overnight camping. Bells Beach itself does not allow overnight stays, so you’ll need to base yourself at one of the nearby parks.
Since camping is not permitted in the Bells Beach Surfing Recreation Reserve car parks or on local roadsides, you will need to secure a spot at a dedicated holiday park. Here are the best options for campervans nearby:
Closest to the Action
· Torquay Foreshore Caravan Park: This is the most popular choice due to its location. It is situated right at the start of the Great Ocean Road and is walking distance to Torquay’s shops and the beach. From here, you can catch the event shuttle or bike to Bells Beach.
· Jan Juc Caravan Park: Slightly closer to Bells Beach than the Torquay town center, this park offers a more laid-back vibe and easy access to the clifftop walking tracks that lead toward the event site.
Nearby Alternatives
· Anglesea Family Caravan Park: Located about 15 minutes south of Bells Beach, Anglesea is a great alternative if Torquay is full. It’s a scenic drive along the coast to reach the event.
· Geelong Surfcoast Hwy Holiday Park: Situated on the main road into Torquay, this park is convenient for those coming from Melbourne and is only a short drive to the coast.
Important Logistics
The event window runs from April 1 to April 11, 2026, coinciding with the Easter long weekend.
· Event Shuttles: During the Rip Curl Pro, parking at Bells Beach is extremely limited. Most visitors park in Torquay and take the official event shuttle buses. Staying at a park in Torquay or Jan Juc makes accessing these shuttles much easier.
· Book Early: The event usually takes place around the Easter long weekend, which is peak season for the Surf Coast.
· Winery Stays: If you are looking for a unique overnight spot away from the crowds, some nearby estates in the Surf Coast hinterland occasionally offer "Harvest Hosts" style parking or have small dedicated campervan sites. Mount Duneed Estate and St Anne's Vineyards are in the general region and worth checking for availability.

Are there restrictions where l can drive a campervan?
Are there restrictions where l can drive a campervan?
2WD campervans can only be driven on sealed/bitumen roads. The exception is well maintained access roads of less than 2 kilometres to recognised commercial campgrounds and major tourist attractions, depending on your chosen campervan supplier’s conditions (up to 12kms with Apollo, Britz, Cheapa Campa, Maui and Mighty).
4WD campervans can be driven on recognised tracks, depending on road conditions, weather and distance. Written permission may be required from the rental company for many areas in Australia. Therefore discuss your intended travel plans with the rental provider when picking up your vehicle. Additionally vehicle movements may be restricted in certain areas due to adverse road or weather conditions.

Do l need to book my campervan in advance?
Do l need to book my campervan in advance?
Where possible it is recommended that you book in advance, especially if you are considering travel during peak periods such as long weekends, Easter, Christmas and School Holidays, or popular destinations vehicles sell out well in advance.
Customers should consider booking 6 to 8 months in advance to secure the best rate and avoid the disappointment of missing out due to supply being exhausted.
Here's why;
Availability
- High demand, limited supply: Campervans are popular, especially in peak seasons (summer, holidays, long weekends, festivals, sporting events). Waiting too long could mean no availability, or being stuck with a vehicle that doesn’t suit your needs.
- Popular destinations get booked out fast.
Better Prices
- Early bookings usually cost less. Last-minute rentals tend to be significantly more expensive due to limited availability.
- Many companies offer early bird discounts.
More Choice
- Booking early gives you the best selection of campervan types, layouts, and sizes. Last-minute bookings often leave only the largest or smallest (less practical or more expensive) options.
Trip Planning
- A confirmed campervan helps lock in your travel plans. It allows you to plan campsites, routes, and activities confidently.
- Some campsites require campervan size/details in advance to reserve spots.
Peace of Mind
- Especially in high season or remote areas, not having a campervan booked can be stressful. Booking in advance means one less major thing to worry about.
