Drive from Melbourne to Portland to chase some ‘fin’ – Bluefin Tuna, that is

CRUISING around in your Melbourne car rental to Victoria’s hotspots can always be broken up with a bit of activity on the water whether it be a river, creek or the mighty ocean, so I recommend you pack your rods.
Let’s start with the Great Southern Ocean. Just saying the name sounds impressive enough but when considering the idea of tackling it and chasing Bluefin Tuna, I feel it is always worth going with someone who knows the ocean like the back of their hand. I will always recommend you take a professional charter especially in waters that are very [...]

Being part of a tribe brings its own rewards

OK, so you’ve decided to take the family on a road trip, or you’ve roped in a friend or partner to hit the road with you. You’ve then picked up your DriveNow rental camper or car hire in either Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane and you’re staring at the open road. Where to now?
Sometimes it’s good to be spontaneous and have no set plans, but often its better to have a broad idea of what you want, with plenty of room for change along the way – a tribal rewards membership with Family Parks Australia could be just what you [...]

Big things in store on your next road trip – Part II

In part two of our big attractions series, Scott Podmore suggest some more ideas for hitting the bright lights of Melbourne in a DriveNow car rental or campervan hire and hunting down the big stuff in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia.
MELBOURNE is known for it’s arts culture and fine food, but it’s not above jumping on the “big’’ bandwagon with its famous neon Skipping girl Vinegar sign. The sign, in Victoria Street, Abbotsford, is Victorian Heritage-registered and one of the state’s most significant landmarks. It was first established in the 1930s featuring “Little Audrey’’ and a smaller version [...]

Discoveries Down the Great Ocean Road

One of Victoria’s most popular and most written about Car journeys is the Great Ocean Road. Officially starting at Torquay and finishing at Allansford the road is just over 240 kilometres long and includes some of Victoria’s premiere attractions.
For our Trip we picked up a hire car in Melbourne through DriveNow (that’s the Ubiquitous plug out of the way) and headed south down the freeway to Geelong about 60 mins away. We decided to make the outward journey down the Great Ocean Road and cut inland for the return trip via the Princes Highway.
First piece of advice – [...]

Take a day trip to Melbourne’s east

VISITORS to Victoria’s capital looking for a weekend day-trip may not know the Yarra Valley is a prime location and only an hour from the CBD in your car rental. They also should know the Maroondah Highway is the most logical route. But, what they might not know is that for a few minutes extra, a whole new world of stunning views and attractions await.
Head out through Templestowe and Eltham and drive through the picturesque valleys of Kangaroo Ground, taking the Yarra Glen turn off  - just past the general store.  Watch out for Watson’s Creek Cafe and Antiques, [...]

The Great Ocean Road region hugs the contours of Victoria’s rugged south west coast and offers visitors one of Australia’s greatest and most spectacular coastal drives.

Keeping it in the family – hit the holiday park Victorian road trip highway

HOLIDAY parks are experiencing a boom time period, there’s no doubt about that, with more and more Australians realising the idea of a road trip holiday staying at the new breed of caravan parks is not only a financially convenient option, but also a fun one.
So, where do you begin? Let’s start with Victoria and, as a starting point, let’s choose the state’s capital city for collection of your Melbourne campervan rental. Then let’s look at one of the more popular holiday park chains  – Family Parks. The facilities at most holiday parks these days are ideal for campervanners [...]

A beauty by the beach on Great Ocean Road

Barwon Heads was next on the agenda for the Everitt clan and it was an easy 90-minute road trip from Melbourne or if you are coming along the Great Ocean Road in an Adelaide campervan rental then its only a 20-minute deviation from Geelong.
Barwon Heads is the most beautiful beachside village you are likely to see, especially in Victoria. There’s a tonne of beach for everyone to enjoy, including ocean, river and estuary – you name it, they have it. The Barwon Heads Caravan Park was built on multi-million dollar land which runs right along the river/estuary. There are [...]

Secret’s out for a grape escape to Nagambie Lakes

UNDER normal circumstances if someone were to ask me along on a road trip from Melbourne to Nagambie, a less than two-hour drive, my first question would be, ‘Why?’.
Understandable enough, especially when you consider there really isn’t a lot on offer aside from being a humble little country town of under 2000 people. Well, that is until you realise what’s tucked around the corner by way of wineries, a super holiday park and a whopper man-made lake to whet the appetite for water activity fanatics.
On top of that, the road trip from Melbourne is an enchanted one, but [...]

Head for the hills in your Melbourne car rental

Omeo is one of those places in Victoria you wouldn’t automatically slot into your itinerary, but it’s a great little destination in the east of the state and worthwhile road trip experience from Melbourne.
Omeo is tucked away at the base of the Snowy Mountains, just a 90-minute drive north of Bairnsdale or a five-hour drive along the Princes Freeway, Princes Highway and Great Alpine Rd after you grab a Melbourne car rental in the CBD. There’s much to explore along the way if heading along the southern route through the Gippsland region.
The town itself flies under the radar [...]
