Consider visiting one of these great camping grounds in South Australia and before heading hitting the road, make sure you check booking requirements and what facilities are available. These camping sites are often filled on a first-come first serve basis because of their popularity - and campers love these sites for good reason, too.

Long Beach

Claim your own little stretch of white, sandy beach for free. Long Beach is 100 km long, running from Kingston to the Murray Mouth. Fishermen say Long Beach is one of Australia’s best surf fishing destinations, yet it’s also a great spot for relaxing. Much of the beach falls within the Coorong National Park which allows for free entry for vehicles but does charge an overnight fee from $16 night.

World Ends Gorge Campground

This green, shady camping group, located 26 km south east of Burra, is an open paddock near a tranquil creek. It’s an extremely popular camping spot, which means it’s best to arrive during the week as opposed to on weekends. This will allow you to choose an ideal site with some shade. Bring your own drinking water

The Gap, Yorke Peninsula

A popular and open camping area, with several beachfront sites located among the dunes on the Yorke Peninsula’s western side. Go swimming, fishing or kayaking in the ocean, just metres from your tent. Bookings to camp here can be made through the local Visitor Information Centre.

Terowie Railway Yard

Go back in time at Terowie, a town that’s home to charming, untouched 19^th Century buildings. The main street is lined with these historical buildings and you can explore the displays inside by asking for keys from the café. There’s a free campsite in the old railway station yards. There’s also plenty of space and in such a quiet town you’re bound to have a good night’s sleep.

Hancock’s Lookout

Unwind as you sit down and watch sunset over the Upper Spencer Gulf and Yorke Peninsula. Hancock’s Lookout in Mt Remarkable National Park has forty individual campsites. While there aren’t activities at the campsite, the stunning views at Hancock’s Lookout make up for it. Get in early and find a spot along the fence line to make sure nobody interrupts your views.
