Rugby fans will be rejoicing in February with the Auckland Nines competition added to the calendar alongside the Wellington Sevens.

While Wellington has hosted the New Zealand sevens competition for years, the Auckland nines are a whole new ballgame and will be a great chance for NRL teams to showcase their rising talent.

Games take place in two nine-minute halves and the atmosphere is expected to be akin to that of the sevens, which is renowned for its party ambiance.

However, the games will have a bit more of a serious tone and this will be the first time that all 16 NRL teams will be competing over a two-day period.

NRL teams must provide at least 12 players from their top 25 and one of the top five earners, to ensure the tournament is competitive.

The multi million dollar tournament will see a total of 16 NRL teams battling it out and around 96,000 fans are expected to come down to Eden Park over the two day competition.

Promoter Dean Lonergan said the competition will become a fixture on Auckland's sporting calendar.

"I can't see why we won't go close to selling this out in the first year," he said

The Auckland Nines is a two-day event starting on February 15 at Eden Park and is scheduled to be a feature of the New Zealand rugby league calendar for the next five years.

The Wellingtons Sevens competition is the weekend before, February 7- 8. If you're a die hard rugby fan, it could be worth organising a New Zealand car hire or campervan rental so you can attend both events and explore a bit of beautiful New Zealand in between.
