KILLARNEY is the jewel of the Queensland hinterland, so we decided to bask in its glow for a while.

Only a two-hour drive in a southerly direction in your Brisbane campervan rental, Killarney is an easily accessible, stunning little country village nestled at the bottom of some remarkable ranges and waterfalls. The waterfalls, while a steady, hard walk to reach, are worth the effort - Queen Mary Falls and Dags Falls are the best options.

Killarney is the starting point of Australia’s longest river system and a tight-knit community with all the amenities a traveller needs - including great meals at the pub! The local RSL features a museum with a wonderful collection of old photos that offer a fascinating glimpse into the history of the area.

We pulled the campervan into the Killarney View Cabins and Caravan Park; a leisurely 1km walk from town and with great views over the valley. The park is tranquil, with cows patrons can milk, chickens, ducks and a goat. The kids have plenty of room to run around and on Sunday mornings can look forward to a special pancake breakfast.

From Killarney you can explore Granite Belt, head north to the Lockyer Valley or back out to the coast. Another attraction is the widely renowned Killarney Meats. It is here you must stock up on vac-packed meats for the rest of your journey. Whether it’s the friendly local farmer's, the rich soil, the grass, or maybe the water, the meat really is second to none.
