UNDER normal circumstances if someone were to ask me along on a road trip from Melbourne to Nagambie, a less than two-hour drive, my first question would be, 'Why?'.

Understandable enough, especially when you consider there really isn't a lot on offer aside from being a humble little country town of under 2000 people. Well, that is until you realise what's tucked around the corner by way of wineries, a super holiday park and a whopper man-made lake to whet the appetite for water activity fanatics.

On top of that, the road trip from Melbourne is an enchanted one, but you have to take the right route for the magical views. For simple directions, head for the Western Ring Rd and exit for the Hume Highway, then find your way through to Whittlesea-Yea Rd and you're on your way through some beautiful countryside around the townships of Yea and Seymour, particularly the areas hugging along the Goulburn River. Make your way to the Goulburn Valley Highway for a cruisy 70km journey and you'll end up in Nagambie.

Only a kilometre or two out of town is Nagambie Lakes Leisure Park,  a super place to call home during your stay. This is a park that prides itself on being "the sum of many parts". And they're right. This renovated former caravan park is resort-like and so spacious yet choc-o-block with awesome facilities that it won't matter if you're a couple looking for some R&R quiet time or a big family ready for adventure: Think  jumping pillow, playgrounds, large pool, games room, and whatever interests you on or near the water, whether it be the Goulburn or the lake. To be honest, you needn't leave the confines of this excellent venue with accommodation in first class amenities - luxury cabins by the riverside, caravan sites (powered) or ensuite sites, tennis court, river for fishing next to an old gum tree, water skiing, swim in the pool, or just a lazy snack in Chinaman’s Bridge Café as the kookaburras swing by to say g'day. Then there's the BBQ facilities as you look out on the Goulburn River and catch a stunner of a sunset.

Nearby and outside are some excellent winery adventures, something that we particularly enjoyed. Mitchelton Wines, with a history dating back to 1836,  not only offers some amazing drops (Rieslings, Marsannes, Chardonnays, Shiraz and more) but is set in beautiful surrounds with one of the most unusual towers ever built in a cellar door complex, designed by renowned Australian architect Ted Ashton. It's a might 50m to 60m skyscraper with a big venue up the top and resembling something you'd find at an airport with air traffic controllers working in it. Also nearby is amazing Tahbilk Winery and Vineyard, one of Australia's most famous wineries.
