Where are the campervan hot spots over a long weekend in Queensland?
Where are the campervan hot spots over a long weekend in Queensland?
Here are some of the top campervan and camping “hot spots” for getaway weekends in Queensland (Australia) — a mix of coastal, island, hinterland and outback destinations that are popular over the Easter & school holiday period. These include both classic beaches and bush-camping favourites as well as good caravan/campervan parks to book early:
Coastal & Island Campervan Hotspots
BIG4 Whitsunday Islands Holiday Park / Airlie Beach
- Great base for exploring the Whitsundays (ideal if you want to take day trips by boat or relax on the mainland). Popular family-friendly park with direct facilities for campervans.
K’gari (Fraser Island)
- One of Queensland’s classic Easter camping destinations — beach driving, freshwater creeks and ocean views. There are multiple camping zones up and down 75 Mile Beach and inland sites too; it fills up early for Easter.
Moreton Island
- Beach camping, 4WD tracks and whale-watching in season. A favourite for campervans if you want something closer to SEQ (requires vehicle barge).
Sunshine Coast (Cotton Tree / Caloundra area)
- Classic beachfront caravan parks like Cotton Tree are always busy over Easter — great for beach access and local cafes.
Far North Queensland & Rainforest Camping
Daintree Rainforest area
- Camping near the rainforest and reef is excellent at Easter (drier weather & plentiful wildlife). Look for spots around Daintree Village or nearby state forest/camping grounds.
Cairns & Atherton Tablelands
- Lake Tinaroo, Babinda Boulders and other Tablelands spots make for lush, cooler camping near waterfalls and swimming holes — ideal for a mix of reef and rainforest exploration at Easter.
Hinterland & Bush Camping
Bunya Mountains National Park
- A beautiful forest retreat with creekside spots and facilities — early booking essential for Easter school holidays.
Carnarvon Gorge & Outback Queensland
- Around Carnarvon Gorge (including popular caravan parks like Big4 Breeze Holiday Parks Carnarvon Gorge), the weather and scenery make for an iconic Easter road trip stop.
Girraween National Park
- Granite landscapes and scenic bush camps with decent facilities — popular for rock-hopping and hiking in autumn/early spring.
Hinterland options near Sunshine Coast / Gympie
- Areas like Charlie Moreland (Imbil State Forest) or Booloumba Creek offer bush camps and creekside relaxation (best with 4WD campervan).

How long does the collection process take when picking up a campervan in Brisbane?
The check-in process usually takes between 40 and 80 minutes depending upon the vehicle. It is strongly recommended to collect your vehicle at least 2 hours prior to the branch closing time.
The check-in process will involve reading and signing the rental agreement. You may be required to watch the campervan introductory instructional video and then a vehicle walk-around demonstration where a staff member will show you the features, appliances, power outlets and how everything works.

Are there restrictions where l can drive a campervan?
Are there restrictions where l can drive a campervan?
2WD campervans can only be driven on sealed/bitumen roads. The exception is well maintained access roads of less than 2 kilometres to recognised commercial campgrounds and major tourist attractions, depending on your chosen campervan supplier’s conditions (up to 12kms with Apollo, Britz, Cheapa Campa, Maui and Mighty).
4WD campervans can be driven on recognised tracks, depending on road conditions, weather and distance. Written permission may be required from the rental company for many areas in Australia. Therefore discuss your intended travel plans with the rental provider when picking up your vehicle. Additionally vehicle movements may be restricted in certain areas due to adverse road or weather conditions. If you're visiting from overseas, Australian road rules — including speed limits, roundabout etiquette and left-hand driving — are worth brushing up on before you set off.
For additional information on road restrictions, visit Road Restrictions
Do l need to book my campervan in advance?
Do l need to book my campervan in advance?
Where possible it is recommended that you book in advance, especially if you are considering travel during peak periods such as long weekends, Easter, Christmas and School Holidays, or popular destinations vehicles sell out well in advance.
Customers should considering booking 6 to 8 months in advance to secure the best rate and avoid the disappointment of missing out due to supply being exhausted.
Here's why;
Availability
- High demand, limited supply: Campervans are popular, especially in peak seasons (summer, holidays, long weekends, festivals, sporting events). Waiting too long could mean no availability, or being stuck with a vehicle that doesn’t suit your needs.
- Popular destinations get booked out fast.
Better Prices
- Early bookings usually cost less. Last-minute rentals tend to be significantly more expensive due to limited availability.
- Many companies offer early bird discounts.
More Choice
- Booking early gives you the best selection of campervan types, layouts, and sizes. Last-minute bookings often leave only the largest or smallest (less practical or more expensive) options.
Trip Planning
- A confirmed campervan helps lock in your travel plans. It allows you to plan campsites, routes, and activities confidently.
- Some campsites require campervan size/details in advance to reserve spots.
Peace of Mind
- Especially in high season or remote areas, not having a campervan booked can be stressful. Booking in advance means one less major thing to worry about.
Can l reduce my security bond and liability to zero?
Can l reduce my security bond and liability to zero?
Yes, many of the campervan providers will have an option for you to reduce your bond amount and your accident liability down. The bond amount and the options to choose from will depend on which vehicle you will be travelling in and your campervan provider.
